Tea ducky

Recently, Spider informed me of the existence of these cute little tea duckies, and I immediately knew I had to have one.

The duckling arrives in a cute little decorated box, that sort of makes it appear as if it's actually swimming in a river.

And this is what you get after unpacking. A miniature version of the plastic duckies you can get for your bathtub, with its own stand. Which is obviously supposed to represent a puddle of water, but for some reason my mind keeps interpreting it as a cracked-open eggshell. Cause, you know. All eggs are blue, and flat at the bottom, these days.

Hidden inside the eggshell pool is a little compartment that you can unscrew, add some loose leaf tea to, and then put back in place. And then you get to the fun part, which is placing your little duckling into a large mug of hot water, and allowing him to merrily float around for a few minutes while your tea steeps.

Once your tea is done, you can simply place the ducky back onto its stand and let it cool off. It thought this was actually quite well thought out. I have another loose leaf tea infuser, but that one doesn't come with any kind of stand or dish to put it on once the tea's done. So you either get a very strong cup of tea because you lazily leave it in the cup until you've finished drinking it all; or you burn your fingers trying to immediately empty and clean the thing once it's done infusing a piping hot mug of tea, because you can't put it down anywhere without dripping tea all over that surface. (Well, I suppose putting out a saucer beforehand and placing it on top of that would be another option. But for some reason I never think of that one until it's too late. :P) So anyway, you let the little duckling cool off, and then you can just simply unscrew the container again and empty it out and rinse. Very cool and easy to use! :)

    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workout, 20mins walk, 20mins cycling. 2/2
    • Challenge (Procrastinators Anonymous): Umm. I'm always procrastinating on plenty of things, and had already picked the thing I was going to do today... and then I didn't. Do it. Or any of the other things, for that matter. I don't really have an excuse, either. :P 0/2

    • Challenge (Random Act of Kindness): Umm. Does the Random Act of Kindness have to be towards a person? Cause I was studying from home all day and didn't see anyone. :P But I did sit down to cuddle and pet my kitty quite extensively, instead of largely ignoring her incessant pleas for attention. So, um, 1/2?

    • Challenge (Try It, You'll Like It): So... I don't really like couscous. I don't really like eggplant. I don't hate either, but I'm not a huge fan, either. So I'm not entirely sure what possessed me to try this eggplant couscous salad, but I'm glad I did, because I actually loved it! :D 2/2

    • Challenge (Fun Day): Got a haircut! OK, what that should technically say is "I grabbed a pair of scissors and cut 1 to 3* inches off my hair because it was long overdue". But still. :P (*Depending on whether you're looking at the front or the back of my head. I didn't cut my hair that unevenly. (I hope.))  2/2

  • Sunday:
    • Food: Sooo I didn't have any dinner in the house, but I was also too lazy to go grocery shopping... and so, instead of just eating a healthy sandwich or something, I pretty much ended up grazing on all the things I could find all evening. Whoops. I didn't even bother to write it all down, but it definitely must've ended up at over 1800. 0/2
    • Water: 1.5 L water, 1 cups of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: Rest day! 2/2
    • Challenge  (Make Up Day): Umm, so I should have done at least one of those things I've been procrastinating on all week, to make up for Tuesday. Except for the part where I, well, didn't. :P 0/2
    • Diary: 0/2
    • Total: 4

I said I was going to finish up with a strong final week, and I mostly did, until I hit Sunday. :P Only 1400 or so calories on average for all the weekdays, and then on Saturday, where I had a BBQ party and was sure I was going to go over, I actually managed to end up right at my 1800 "limit", thanks to consciously eating only 3 small pieces of lean meat and then switching to veggies and stuff. So I was quite proud of myself, and then I completely fell off the wagon on Sunday. :P Still, I scored 61 points out of 70, so I guess that's not too bad.

In total, for the whole 28-day-plan, I ended up scoring 247 points out of a possible 280! So that's an average of almost 9 out of 10 points per day, which I would think is a pretty decent score. The scale was nice to me as well, and greeted me with a 74.3 (164lbs). I started week 1 at 76.3kg (168lbs), so that's a nice steady 1lb/wk loss, on average, just as recommended!

Let's see if we can keep that up, since I'm obviously nowhere near my goal weight, yet. I won't be repeating the actual plan, though. I will need to keep up the healthy eating and exercising anyway, if I want to continue losing weight, I literally met my water goal every single day so there's not much of a point in tracking that (and really, I was kind of expecting that, since I already typically drink quite a bit of water), and coming up with a fill for the challenges got tedious instead of fun pretty fast, I'll have to admit. So, I won't be boring you with any more of these posts. ;)

28 day plan – week 3 results

Three out of the four weeks over already! Without further ado, let's see how I did...

  • Monday:
    • Food: 86 g protein, 266 carbs, 85 g fat, 2197 kcal total. I was doing great all day... and then I caved and ate an indecent amount of nutella straight from the jar. Whoops. 0/2
    • Water: 1.5 L  water, 1 cup of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise:  30mins cycling. 2/2
    • Challenge (Celebrate Me): So I came up with a bunch of different fills for this, doing a manicure or pedicure or a facial or whatever... and then I realised I didn't actually feel like doing any of those things, making them feel like "work" instead of something to relax, and I really just wanted to veg out on the couch watching TV instead. And then I figured, if that's how I was feeling today, that was a much more logical way to "take some time to yourself" than forcing myself to do something I didn't even feel like doing in the first place. So I did just that. 2/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 8 points
  • Tuesday:
    • Food: 86 g protein, 179 g carbs, 63 g fat, 1650 kcal total. 2/2
    • Water: 1.5 L water, 1 cup of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: 2 bodyrock workouts, 20mins walk. 2/2
    • Challenge (Procrastinators Anonymous): A whole bunch of my programs had been nagging me about updates for weeks now (Adobe Reader, Flash, Java, Windows itself etc.), but I kept ignoring them. Downloading and installing all those updates (and having to reboot your laptop multiple times in the process, typically) easily takes like half an hour, and if I'm at the computer, I'm there because I want to use it for some purpose, not do stuff like that instead. And if I'm not at the computer, well, then I can't really do it, either, can I. So I'd been putting that off for several weeks now, like I always do, and this afternoon and finally sat down and did them. 2/2

    • Exercise: 20mins walk. 1/2
    • Challenge (Random Act of Kindness): Did about half an hour of overtime so I could finish something up... suppose that counts. 2/2

    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workout. 2/2
    • Challenge (Fun Day): I've mentioned before that I got this Danish language course. Well, I still hadn't started it, cause, you know... between lectures, labs and homework, I probably spend like 25-30 hours per week on uni stuff, and then I also work 2-4 shifts per week (I actually have two jobs, now), so in my free time, I hadn't felt very much like doing more studying just yet. ;) So this afternoon, my class finished early, and I promised myself: okay, at least start with the first lesson today. Just do the first section of the first lesson, and then you can play your new Alice game all evening long. (That was going to be my Fun thing for the Day.) So I did, and it was easier than I'd been expecting, and I got really into it, and before I knew it, it was halfway through the evening and I'd just finished the whole first lesson. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to learn new words! So I'm now actually considering this my Fun thing, seeing as I then felt too lazy to play my game, afterwards. (Yes, I consider learning stuff to be fun. On a completely unrelated note, have I ever mentioned how Hermione is probably my favourite character from the Harry Potter novels?)  2/2

  • Saturday:
    • Food: Did not fill out food log, but way more than 1800 at least -- probably in the 2500-3000 region... 0/2
    • Water: 1.5L water, 1 cup of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: Rest day. 2/2
    • Challenge (Cleaning Out The Cobwebs): Decided to postpone this until tomorrow, as I was out of the house almost the entire day.  0/2

  • Sunday:
    • Food: Same as yesterday... did not count anything, but must have been at least 2500. 0/2
    • Water: 1.5 L water, 2 cups of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: None, and I'd already counted yesterday, which also had none, as my weekly rest day, so... 0/2
    • Challenge  (Make Up Day): Cleaned up my room and bathroom once I got back home. 2/2
    • Diary: 0/2

Only 54 points this week, which is quite a ways down compared to the previous two. I still did pretty good on all workdays, but then the weekend hit and well, I basically just had two giant cheat days. I didn't bother to get on the scale on those days, either, so I guess Friday's weigh-in (at 74.9kg) will have to count as my "end" weight for the week. Just about another pound down, from my 75.3kg at the start of it, annnd we have that magical "4" in there for the first time! After my antics this weekend, though, I probably gained it all straight back... oh well. Let's just see if we can finish nice and strongly in the last week!

F.lux – an addendum

The other day, I bought this T-shirt off Teefury. It has Abed and Troy (from Community), in a blanket fort, reading Kickpuncher comics. Pretty awesome, right? It is also very inyourface-bright red.

Now, I don't mind this, but it was a little bit of an unexpected surprise, when I opened the package. You see, I was under the assumption that I'd ordered a nice, soft, almost pastel-ish orangey-red t-shirt, not an #FF0000 firetruck bright one. I actually went "huh. that's the kind of false advertising I'm not used to seeing on Teefury" for a second. So I went to their archives, relocated the t-shirt, and found that it was at least as bright as up above, in their picture. This confused me even more -- "how did I not notice that?" -- until I suddenly realised I had first seen the t-shirt ad in the evening, and then ordered it that very same night. (Well, you kind of have to, considering they sell a different shirt every day. :P) You don't suppose... I forced my f.lux to turn on despite it being daytime, for a minute, and sure enough, there was the nice soft pastel red again. Whoops.

Basically this blog post is a big "note to self: f.lux has a nice 'disable if you need to do colour-sensitive stuff' button -- learn to use it."

While we're on the subject of Community and t-shirts anyway, I now own a Teefury t-shirt that has Abed from Community on it, while Abed has worn a Teefury t-shirt on Community. There's something very meta in there somewhere.

The screencapped proof from 3x01, but he wears the same one in 2x21 as well. Admittedly I'm not entirely sure this was also a Teefury print as I don't actually own this design myself, but Liam does, and I'm fairly certain he mentioned getting it from there. It was definitely one of those "shirt a day" shops like Teefury or Qwertee or whatever, anyway. So there. :P

    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workout, 20mins walk, 20mins cycling. 2/2
    • Challenge (Procrastinators Anonymous): I picked a preliminary class schedule for my third year... something which I'd only been procrastinating on for like a month. :P 2/2

  • Wednesday:
    • Food: 70.5 g protein, 192 g carbs, 38.5 g fat, 1424 kcal total. 2/2

    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workouts, 20mins cycling, 20mins walk. 2/2
    • Challenge (Random Act of Kindness): Umm, well, it's not like I was not nice to someone today, but I can't really say I did any specific acts of kindness towards anyone, either. 0/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 8 points
  • Thursday:
    • Food: 95 g protein, 231 g carbs, 38 g fat, 1654 kcal total. 2/2
    • Water: 1.5 L water, 1 cup of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: 30mins cycling, 1 zumba workout. 2/2
    • Challenge (Try It, You'll Like It): I did a Zumba workout for the first time... it was pretty fun :) 2/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 10 points
  • Friday:
    • Food: 70 g protein, 195.5 g carbs, 55 g fat, 17 g alcohol, 1703 kcal total. 2/2
    • Water: 1.75L water, 2 cups of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workout. 2/2
    • Challenge (Fun Day): I baked a big batch of cookies! Also, in the evening, I went to check out the new NURDspace. 2/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 10 points
  • Saturday:
    • Food: 77 g protein, 256 g carbs, 91 g fat, 2173 kcal total. I visited my mum in the afternoon and then had a birthday party in the evening... all things considered, I was actually surprised about my consumed calories when I filled out my food log. I suspected I'd gone wayyyy over my 1800 "limit", but it's not actually that bad! I still "only" ate about as much calories as I burned today. Still: 0/2
    • Water: 1.5L water, 2 cups of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: 1 bodyrock workout. 2/2
    • Challenge (Cleaning Out The Cobwebs): I cleaned my bathroom. Including that icky deposit of hair in the shower drain. Ewww. :P  2/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 10
  • Sunday:
    • Food: 66 g protein, 192 g carbs, 54 g fat, 1531 kcal total. 2/2
    • Water: 1.5 L water, 1 cup of coffee. 2/2
    • Exercise: Rest day! Also: 20mins walk. 2/2
    • Challenge  (Make Up Day): Okay, so one thing I've never been clear on: if you missed/failed a challenge, can you just make up for it during the remainder of the week, or do you have to wait for Sunday to come around? Cause that seems kind of illogical. I missed the Random Act Of Kindness on Wednesday, but then I already gave literally dozens of homemade cookies away to four different people over the course of Friday and Saturday... but didn't really perform any specific acts of kindness today, on Sunday. Whatever, I'm still counting it :P 2/2
    • Diary: 2/2
    • Total: 10

So, 68 points in total out of a possible 70! Pretty awesome :D Also, unlike last week, I did lose two pounds this week, going from a start weight of 76.3kg (168lbs) to 75.3kg today (166). :)
